Imagine you’re a judge at one of the 400 annual contests sponsored by the Kansas City Barbeque Society. Hundreds of people come to let loose and pig out on the beef briskets, spareribs, and pork shoulders prepared by the competing teams of chefs, but you are not among them. The rules require you to stay in a silent judging area where the food is served in anonymous numbered boxes. You don’t know who cooked what, the other judges’ scores, or even if you voted for the winner.

Double-blind tests—those in which the subjects and those running the test have limited information—are not just for BBQ contests. Because they reduce bias, they are used extensively in medical research. New medicines, for example, undergo a rigorous form of double-blind testing before being certified for public use. So feel free to ask a friend for a restaurant recommendation, but if you want the best damn ribs in KC (or pills that work), check the results of a double-blind test.
