Plate tectonics is a central theory in Earth sciences that explains the movement of the Earth’s outer shell, known as the lithosphere. This shell is divided into large pieces called tectonic plates, which float on the semi-fluid layer beneath them. These plates are constantly moving, although usually at very slow speeds. Their interactions at boundaries can lead to various geological phenomena, including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and the formation of mountain ranges. For example, when two plates collide, one may be forced beneath the other in a process called subduction, often resulting in volcanic activity.
Scientists study plate tectonics to better understand natural hazards and the history of the Earth’s surface. By analyzing rock formations, seismic data, and ocean floor patterns, researchers can reconstruct how continents have shifted over millions of years. This knowledge also helps predict areas that are more prone to earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. However, these natural processes can sometimes cause significant damage to human communities. Despite this, ongoing research and improved monitoring systems are helping scientists provide earlier warnings and reduce the risks associated with tectonic activity.

In the first sentence you will see the word ‘lithosphere’. This word refers to the outer most layer of the earth’s crust. Here are some more sentences with the word.
‘Tectonic plates are parts of the lithosphere that move slowly over time.’
‘Earthquakes often occur when stress builds up within the lithosphere and is suddenly released.’
