This week, we are going to look at some errors which are very common in Taiwan.
Task 1: Study the error box: have
Notes:
*If ‘have’ means ‘possess’, don’t use it in ‘be Ving’.
*If ‘have’ means ‘possess’, you can also use ‘I’ve got’. It’s the same meaning.
*The past of ‘I’ve got’ is ‘had’, not ‘had got’.
*There are two question forms of ‘have’ meaning ‘possession’: ‘have you got…?’ and ‘do you have…?’. Their meaning is exactly the same.
*Use ‘I have’/ ‘Do you have…?’ for more formal writing. Use ‘I’ve got’/ ‘Have you got…?’ for more informal speaking.
*When you’re using ‘have got’ in speaking, always contract the pronunciation:
‘I’ve got/You’ve got/(s)he’s got’, not ‘I have got/You have got/(s)He has got.’
