與現在事實相反的假設

表與現在事實相反的假設，在 if 子句中用過去式，在主要子句中再用 would、should、could 或 might 加原形動詞。例如：

・ If I were the CEO, I would hire the other applicant.
假如我是執行長，我會聘用另外那一位申請者。

・ If I had the power, I might hire both applicants.
假如我有那個權限，我可能兩個申請者都聘。 

與過去事實相反的假設

表與過去事實相反的假設，if 子句裡用過去完成式，主要子句則用 would、should、could、might 加 have 和過去分詞。例如：

・ If I had known this, I wouldnt have said that.
假如我知道這件事，我就不會那麼說了。

・ If Tony had left earlier, he should have arrived in time.
假如東尼早些出發，他就應該會及時抵達。

對未來強烈懷疑的假設句

因為未來時間尚未到來，所以說「與未來事實相反」並不恰當，我們只能說「對未來的狀況抱持強烈的懷疑」。欲表對未來的強烈懷疑， if 子句中可用 should 加原形動詞或用 were to 加原形動詞，主要子句則用 would、should、could、might 加原形動詞。例如：

・ If it should rain tomorrow, we would stay indoors.
萬一明天下雨，我們就待在室內。

・ If Emma were to become the boss, I might just quit.
萬一艾瑪變成了老闆，我可能就辭職不幹。
