一般而言，專有名詞前不需要用冠詞，但須注意以下這 22 個常與定冠詞 the 連用的專有名詞。

A. 海、海洋之名稱
例 the Black Sea「黑海」、the Pacific Ocean「太平洋」

B. 海灣、海峽之名稱
例 the Persian Gulf「波斯灣」、the Taiwan Strait「台灣海峽」

C. 河流名稱
例 the Yellow River「黃河」、the Mississippi River「密西西比河」、the Nile「尼羅河」

D. 山脈名稱
例 the Himalaya Mountains（the Himalayas）「喜馬拉雅山脈」、the Alps「阿爾卑斯山脈」
※ 獨座的山則不須用 the，如：Mount Ali「阿里山」、Mount Fuji「富士山」。

E. 群湖之名稱
例 the Great Lakes「五大湖」、the Virginia Lakes「維吉尼亞湖」
※ 單獨的湖不須用 the，如：Lake Michigan「密西根湖」、Sun Moon Lake「日月潭」。

F. 群島之名稱
例 the Pescadores「澎湖群島」、the West Indies「西印度群島」
※ 單獨的島不須用 the，如：Long Island「長島」、Bali Island「峇里島」。

G. 半島名稱
例 the Balkan Peninsula「巴爾幹半島」、the Korean Peninsula「朝鮮半島」

H. 沙漠名稱
例 the Sahara (Desert)「撒哈拉沙漠」、the Gobi Desert「戈壁沙漠」

I. 地理位置名稱
例 the North Pole「北極」、the Northern Hemisphere「北半球」、the Middle East「中東」

J. 國家名稱
例 the Republic of China「中華民國」、the United States (of America)「美國」

K. 城市名稱
例 the Hague「海牙」

L. 國際組織名稱
例 the United Nations「聯合國」、the European Union「歐盟」、the Rotary Club「扶輪社」

M. 機關、單位等之名稱
例 the Legislative Yuan「立法院」、the Ministry of Education「教育部」

N. 建築物、橋樑等之名稱
例 the Statue of Liberty「自由女神像」、the Eiffel Towel「艾菲爾鐵塔」
※ 有些建築物則不用定冠詞，如：Taipei 101「台北101」、Sears Tower「希爾斯大廈」。

O. 博物館、圖書館等之名稱
例 the National Central Library「（台灣）國家圖書館」、the Louvre (Museum)「羅浮宮」

P. 大學名
例 the University of London「倫敦大學」、the University of Tokyo「東京大學」
※ 有些大學名不用 the，如：Harvard University「哈佛大學」、National Taiwan University「台灣大學」。

Q. 旅館名
例 the Ambassador Hotel「國賓大飯店」、the Grand Hotel Taipei「圓山大飯店」
※ 有些旅館名不用 the，如：Sheraton Hotel「喜來登飯店」、Hotel Royal「 老爺酒店」。

R. 船名、火車名
例 the Titanic「鐵達尼號」、the Taroko Express「太魯閣號」

S. 時代、朝代等之名稱
例 the Stone Age「石器時代」、the Middle Ages「中世紀」、the Sung Dynasty「宋朝」

T. 戰爭、運動等之名稱
例 the Civil War「南北戰爭」、the Renaissance「文藝復興」

U. 經典名
例 the Bible《聖經》、the Koran《可蘭經》、the Book of Odes《詩經》

V. 報紙名
例 the New York Times 《紐約時報》、the China Times《中國時報》
※ 新聞性雜誌名多不用 the，如：Time《時代雜誌》、Newsweek《新聞週刊》。
