Using 2 Object Verbs

Facebook  Facebook
As you may remember from last week there are some verbs which take 2 objects. Some of these 2 object verb chunks are invertible, and some are not invertible. If you need to remind yourself about this, have a look at last week’s article before you go on. Here we are going to look at both kinds of 2 object verbs, beginning with non-invertible.

Non-invertible 2 object verb chunks

Task 1: Study the language bank below.

 get s/th from s/o

 call s/o about s/th

 receive s/th from s/o

 take s/th from s/o

 take s/th to s/o

Task 2: Insert one of these phrases into the correct sentence below.

about their decision

from foreign customers

 to the meeting

 from the consultant

 from them

1. Can you get the report as soon as possible, please?
2. I need to call head office to close the department.
3. I receive about 25 emails every day.
4. I don’t want to take any money.
5. I don’t want to take the projector.

Task 2. Feedback:
1. Can you get the report from the consultant as soon as possible, please?
2. I need to call head office about their decision to close the department.
3. I receive about 25 emails from foreign customers every day.
4. I don’t want to take any money from them.
5. I don’t want to take the projector to the meeting.

*Notice that the information in the phrases is not necessary. However, if you want to include this information in the sentence, you need to use the preposition before the second object.

*Take great care to learn these chunks correctly. The difficulty is remembering which preposition you need before the second object.

Ok, now let’s look at invertible 2 object verb chunks.
