Set-phrases for email: referencing

Facebook  Facebook
This week we are going to look at how to use referencing in emails. Emails are rather like a conversation. Sometimes in the conversation you need to mention things that were discussed in previous emails, or that were discussed in meetings or phone calls. That’s what referencing is. In this next section we’re going to look at how you can reference previous contact.

Task 1: Study the language bank and example sentences below.
 I

 You

 As I

 As you

 …the n.p.

 …be

 …as

mentioned

 that v.p.

 the n.p. to s/o

 the s/th in s/th

 to s/o how adj

 something about s/th

 in my report

 before
 above

 during n.p.

 earlier

 in paragraph X

 in item X

 on page X

 in our email of X

 in your email.
…the below-

…the above-
 n.p.

As I mentioned before, we need to take action immediately.

Please see the above-mentioned table for more information on this.

I mentioned the problem in my report.

You mentioned that you would be willing to help.

As you mentioned during our meeting, we look forward to receiving your report.

You mentioned to me how interested you were in joining our team.

He didn’t mention your request to me.

The figures mentioned in paragraph 10 of the report are not accurate.

*Notice that because we are always referring to something in the past, ‘mentioned’ is used in the past simple when it means referencing – except of course in the negative: ‘did not mention.’

*Notice that if you use ‘As I mentioned’ etc ‘As you mentioned’ etc, you need to use a comma (,) and then have another clause so that the sentence has two clauses.

*‘Mentioned something about s/th’. The first something is actually the word ‘something’, and not an object, like s/th. You can use this set-phrase to refer to the need for more specific information.

Task 2: Correct these sentences by rewriting them in the space below. Look at the example.
