從屬連接詞 whether 引導的名詞子句也屬間接問句；由 whether 引導的間接問句原本是所謂的 Yes-No 問句，也就是沒有疑問詞的問句，因此在轉變成間接問句時須加上表「是否」的連接詞 whether。而雖然 whether 本身就具有「是否」之意，但是有時為了要強調「是」和「否」，也可以在 whether 子句之後或 whether 之後加上 “or not”。
O whether 可以用 if 替換，僅限下列 2 種情形：
❶ 當該子句為動詞的受詞時
・I’m wondering whether / if they will arrive on time this time.
我在想，不知道他們這一次會不會準時抵達。
❷ 當該子句出現在表「不確定」意涵的形容詞之後時
・We’re not sure whether / if he will come today.
我們不確定他今天會不會來。
X 下列情形 whether 不可用 if 替換：
❶ 為避免讓人誤會是條件句，當表「是否」的子句為句子的主詞時，不可用 If 引導。
・If he gets promotion doesn’t concern me. (誤)
他是不是能獲得升遷與我無關。
❷ 若表「是否」的子句為名詞之同位語時亦不可使用 if。
・The argument if she is beautiful seems meaningless to me. (誤)
對我而言爭論她美不美是沒有意義的。
❸ 若「是否」子句為介系詞之受詞時同樣不應使用 if。
・There was a lot of discussion about if we should continue with the project. (誤)
對於我們是否應該繼續執行這個案子有許多的討論。
❹ 若「是否」子句簡化成不定詞形式時，只能用 whether 而不可用 if 來引導。
・They can’t decide if to get married now or wait until next year. (誤)
他們不能決定該現在結婚還是要等到明年。
