Perhaps we don’t like sheep because their conformist behavior reminds us so much of ourselves. When we are especially timid or embarrassed, we might be called sheepish. When a group of us blindly follows the suggestions of the powerful, we could rightly be called sheeple (as in “sheep people”). And when we willingly go along with a bad idea because we don’t want to stand out from the crowd, we could say we’re sheeping it, as in this conversation:

A: Are you going to tell your teacher how stupid his idea is?
B: Nah, I’m just going to sheep it. I want to pass the class.

Usage Note

Sheepish
has been around for hundreds of years, sheeple has been around for decades, but sheep it is pretty new, so not everyone—not even most native English speakers—will know what it means. Use it and teach them!

“Sheepish”
