Every year on March 8th, people all around the world observe International Womens Day (IWD) to honor the social, economic, cultural, and political accomplishments of women. Also, it serves to emphasize the continuous fight for gender equality, advocate for womens rights and gender justice, and increase awareness of gender inequality.
The origins of International Womens Day may be traced to revolutionary activities among working-class women and their sympathizers. The first International Womens Day was observed in early 1900, when women in Europe and North America were fighting for the right to vote and improved working conditions. Tens of thousands of women marched through New York City in 1908 to generate momentum for better pay and working conditions, which is said to be the origin of the day. A year later, the Socialist Party of America declared a day in honor of women.
The idea for a global day came to Clara Zetkin, the leader of the "womens office" of the German Social Democratic Party, in 1910 while she was in Copenhagen for a meeting. She proposed having a celebration on the same day every year to press for requests.
On March 8, 1914, a march in support of womens suffrage was held in London, and on March 8, 1917, the Russian Revolution was officially launched when tens of thousands of Russian women rallied for peace and food. The tsar was compelled to step down. The United States celebrated the inaugural International Womens Day in 1909, and the United Nations later declared it a worldwide holiday in 1975.
International Womens Day has a different topic every year and emphasizes a certain problem or a problem for women. Chose to Challenge, Women in Leadership: Creating an Equal Future in a COVID-19 World, and Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change were some of the more recent topics.
Across the world, the day is observed in a variety of ways, including rallies, marches, and other occasions that highlight womens challenges and accomplishments. It is also a time to recognize the contributions that women have made to society at large and to their communities.
International Womens Day, in general, acts as a reminder of the continuous battle for gender parity and the need for cooperation in order to build a more fair and just world for all women.
