Democracy is on the rise in Asia, with countries across the region making strides towards greater political freedom and democratic governance. In particular, Taiwan, Indonesia, South Korea, and the Philippines have emerged as shining examples of democracy in Asia, with robust civil societies, free and fair elections, and vibrant public discourse.

In Taiwan, democracy has been a hallmark of the countrys political system since the late 1980s. After decades of authoritarian rule, Taiwan underwent a peaceful transition to democracy, with the first direct presidential election held in 1996. Since then, Taiwan has consistently held free and fair elections, with a vibrant civil society that actively engages in public debate and advocacy.

Indonesia has also made impressive strides towards democracy in recent years. After the fall of authoritarian leader Suharto in 1998, Indonesia has held several successful democratic elections, with power shifting between different political parties. The country has also made progress in reducing corruption, strengthening the rule of law, and improving human rights.

South Korea, another Asian democracy, has seen its political system evolve significantly since the end of authoritarian rule in the 1980s. The country has held free and fair elections since then, with the peaceful transfer of power between different political parties. South Korea also boasts a robust civil society, with active participation in public debate and advocacy for social issues.

Finally, the Philippines has had a long and tumultuous history with democracy, including a period of authoritarian rule under Ferdinand Marcos. However, since the People Power Revolution in 1986, the country has held regular democratic elections, with the most recent presidential election in 2022. The country also has a vibrant civil society, with active participation in public debate and advocacy for political and social issues.

Despite these successes, challenges remain for democracies in Asia. Many countries in the region continue to grapple with issues such as corruption, political repression, and limited press freedom. However, the progress made in countries like Taiwan, Indonesia, South Korea, and the Philippines offers hope for a brighter democratic future in Asia. By continuing to promote democratic values and institutions, these countries can serve as models for others in the region, paving the way for greater political freedom and democratic governance.

‘The NGO and the government agency formed a partnership to hold a fair and transparent election for the board of directors, with the aim of ensuring greater representation and accountability in decision-making.’
‘The sports association and the local government formed a partnership to hold an election for the new sports council.’
